A through-the-wall unit is a self-contained cooling system: the entire refrigeration system sits in one cabinet that mounts in an opening in the cellar wall. The cold side faces the cellar and the warm side exhausts into the room behind it. With no separate condenser and no refrigerant lines to run, it is the simplest system to install and a common choice for wine closets and small to mid-sized cellars.
Before you choose
- The room the unit exhausts into must be large and ventilated enough to absorb its heat.
- Some models can vent outdoors through an exterior wall with the right housing.
- Capacity is rated in cubic feet; size to your room and its insulation, not to bottle count.
Ranges include WhisperKOOL SC PRO and Extreme, Wine Guardian TTW Classic, Sentinel and Defender, and the KoolR Magnum.
